What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a hands-on, gentle healing modality that focuses on the craniosacral system, which includes the central nervous system. It uses light touch to release tension in the body's connective tissue network (fascia) and is often used to address pain, stress, and emotional issues. CST is a holistic approach that aims to promote the body's natural self-healing abilities.
CST is not a massage.
Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on healing approach that focuses on the subtle rhythms and movements of your skull, spine, and the fluid that surrounds your brain and spinal cord.
The basic idea is that your body has a natural rhythm - kind of like a very slow pulse - created by the production and circulation of cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid cushions and nourishes your brain and spinal cord. CST practitioners believe they can feel this rhythm by placing their hands very lightly on your head, neck, back, or other parts of your body.
During a session, you'll lie fully clothed on a massage table while the therapist uses an extremely light touch - about the weight of a nickel - to "listen" to your body's rhythm and gently encourage areas of restriction to release. The touch is so gentle that many people find it deeply relaxing, almost meditative.
Practitioners say CST can help with things like headaches, neck and back pain, stress, and TMJ disorders. The therapy was developed by osteopathic physician John Upledger in the 1970s, building on earlier work by Dr. William Sutherland.
What makes CST unique is its incredibly gentle nature - there's no manipulation or forceful movement involved. Many people describe feeling a sense of deep relaxation or release during sessions, even if they're not sure exactly what's happening. Some fall asleep, while others report feeling energy shifts or emotional releases.
Whether you're curious about trying it or just want to understand what it involves, CST is essentially about supporting your body's natural healing processes through very gentle, mindful touch.
